What is Body Scrub?

The skin is the body’s largest organ. Body scrubs remove the outer layer to reveal the newer skin beneath. This shedding of the outer layer unclogs pores, keeps skin clean, and helps reduce acne breakouts. Scrubs are also beneficial for people who have hard skin building up on their feet and for shaving and waxing as it exposes the hair follicles. It is also advisable to use a scrub before you have a tan.

Also, during ageing and the menopause the natural process of skin renewal becomes uneven, which gives skin a dry and rough feeling. Body scrubs can help as they remove the dry dead skin for you.

How often should I have a body scrub?

It is advised that you should have a body scrub once a week depending on the product that you use and the part of your body you use it on. Always consult the directions of use. Salons also provide body scrubs as part of packages such as after a body wrap or before you have a professional tan.

Different types of body scrubs

The beauty industry offers various types of body scrubs as a form of exfoliation.
Most scrubs contain micro plastic beads, salts, and other grain like ingredients to physically remove the dead skin by rigorously rubbing them up against the skin, leaving it looking healthier and feeling radiant. Some prefer to create their own body scrubs using everyday household ingredients. Typical homemade scrubs tend to include sugar or salt crystals, water, honey, oats, pumice and vitamin E oil depending on skin type and the ingredients preferred.

Typical Prices

Body scrub prices can range from as little as £15 to as much £60 depending on the sophistication of scrub and the results that you desire.

Points to Consider

It is important to remember that over-exfoliation with scrubs can dry and irritate the skin, which can lead to wrinkle development. Plastic beads often used as exfoliants do not biodegrade. They are washed into rivers and oceans, where they remain for a very long time and are a danger to marine life. However there are many body scrubs available that strictly use only natural biodegradable ingredients.
